Large International Multi-Centre Trial Announced for Oral Vancomycin in PSC-IBD
New Vancomycin Study Announced
We are happy to share exciting news directly from the EASL Congress (embargoed until now). Professor Palak Trivedi has officially announced funding for a landmark, international multi-centre trial evaluating oral vancomycin for people living with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The study will be funded by LifeArc, PSC Support and the Children’s PSC Foundation and is called VITALITY.
For many in our community, vancomycin is a topic of intense interest. While it is frequently discussed, accessing it has been a significant hurdle due to the lack of robust evidence demonstrating who it benefits, how it works, and the optimal duration of treatment. This landmark trial aims to provide the answers our community has been waiting for.
Listen to Professor Trivedi talking about VITALITY at the 2026 EASL research conference:
Designed by Patients, for Patients
What makes this trial truly unique is how it was designed. Members of the PSC Support community and Patient Panel were involved right from the beginning, directly shaping how the study was designed.
PSC Support’s Patient Panel pool is a dedicated group of people living with PSC and their close family members who share their views to shape research and charity activities. They comment on study plans, help decide which research projects to fund, refine lay communications, and make clinical trials more practical and relevant. Their involvement is vital because it ensures that research directly reflects the real needs, priorities, and lived experiences of the PSC community.
Moving PSC Research Forward Together
The VITALITY trial directly aligns with our wider research commitment to championing patient involvement, accelerating clinical trials, and repurposing existing therapies to slow disease progression and improve quality of life.
We extend a huge thank you to Professor Trivedi who listened to the PSC patient community, and every patient volunteer who gave their time and insights to help bring this study to fruition. We look forward to following the progress of VITALITY and sharing updates as it unfolds.
